Photo evidence of previous work — real projects, real addresses (redacted as needed).

Clear payment terms — deposits should be reasonable and staged; never pay large sums in cash up-front.

Willingness to visit before quoting — no reputable roofer quotes without seeing the roof.

Time to answer questions — a contractor who won't explain the job isn't the right contractor.
