What to Do When Your Roof Is Leaking

The first hour of a roof leak matters. Contained damage stays cheap; unmanaged damage spreads through ceilings, insulation and electrics.

First: contain the water. Place a bucket or container under the drip and, if the ceiling is bulging, pierce the lowest point of the bulge with a screwdriver to release trapped water into your container. A controlled release is far better than a sudden ceiling collapse.

Second: turn off electrics in the affected area if water is anywhere near light fittings or wiring.

Third: move furniture, electronics and valuables clear of the drip zone. Photograph any damage as you go — useful for insurance later.

Do not climb onto the roof. Wet roofs are lethal, and most 'quick fixes' from a ladder cause more damage than they prevent.
