Can a drone roof inspection find a leak?
A drone can identify visible defects that may be responsible for a leak, such as damaged tiles, failed flashing, valley problems or deterioration around chimneys and rooflights. Because water can travel inside the roof and some defects are hidden, drone imagery may need to be combined with an internal or physical inspection.
What imagery can show
Aerial photography frequently reveals the visible causes of leaks: slipped or cracked units, displaced ridge tiles, failed or lifted flashing, blocked valleys and debris around outlets.
Seeing the whole roof at once also helps rule areas out, which narrows the search considerably.
Why it is not a guarantee
Water travels, and some entry points are hidden beneath the covering or only leak under particular wind and rain conditions. Those cannot be confirmed from above.
A drone survey is therefore best used alongside internal inspection of the roof space rather than as a standalone leak test.
