Should I repair storm damage before my insurer inspects it?
The priority is making the property safe and preventing further damage, but permanent work should generally be coordinated with the insurer where a claim may be made. Photograph visible damage first where safe and keep records and invoices for emergency measures.
Making safe is not the same as repairing
Insurers generally expect you to prevent further damage — that is a condition of most policies — so temporary protection is normally appropriate before an inspection.
Permanent repairs are different. Carrying those out before the insurer has assessed the damage can remove the evidence they need, so it is worth confirming their position first.
Keeping the evidence
Photograph the damage before and after any temporary work, keep any removed material where it is safe to do so, and retain receipts for emergency work.
Note the date and the weather conditions; both are commonly requested when a claim is assessed.
