What should be included in a roofing quote?
A useful written roofing quotation should clearly describe the work, materials, access or scaffolding, waste removal, VAT position where relevant, payment terms, expected programme and guarantees. Vague quotes make it difficult to compare contractors and understand exactly what you are purchasing.
What Should Be Included in a Roofing Quote?
A verbal estimate is a starting point. A written quote is what you actually engage on. A good one leaves no surprises.
1. Named client, property address and date. 2. Company name, address and registration number so you can verify who you're contracting with.
3. Scope of works — exactly what will be done, on which elevations and to what standard.
4. Materials — brand, grade and colour where relevant (e.g. 'Cembrit Diamond Blue-Black Welsh slate', not just 'slate').
5. Ancillaries — underlay, battens, ventilation, dry-fix, lead code, fasteners. Missing these is where cheap quotes hide the real cost.
6. Access — scaffold or ladders, who supplies and hires, and the expected duration.
7. Waste — skip provision, removal and site reinstatement.
8. Price — total including VAT, with a payment schedule (deposit, stages, retention). Never pay large sums in cash up front.
9. Guarantee — workmanship duration in writing plus manufacturer warranty details.
10. Validity — how long the price is held. Typical is 30 days.
